Hello! I’m Julia Rebecca Velasco, and I’m a student at Full Sail University under the master’s program for New Media Journalism.
I was born and raised in Alice, Texas, and I have been living in Kingsville. I attended Coastal Bend College in 2015, then transferred to Texas A&M University-Kingsville from 2017 to 2022, where I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts. Since living in Kingsville, I have 4 of my boys’ cats with me, and I enjoy working at Dairy Queen as part of the Kitchen Grill Crew as my part-time job.
I’ve been listening to K-Pop and other genres of music since 2010, when I was younger and on YouTube on my old Dell laptop. That laptop has seen me change a lot, and that’s when I fell down the rabbit hole with both of those music genres. That’s also where I got my knowledge of those music genres!
I’ve started this major because I’ve been enjoying writing for as long as I can remember, along with doing art. Another reason I’m in this program is that I want to become a journalist focusing on the music genre called K-pop. I’ve been very passionate not only about the music but also about everything else in the K-Wave world, or better known as Hallyu. Not only do I enjoy everything South Korea offers, but I’m also passionate about everything related to Japan, like the culture, the food, and, most especially, the variety of music. As you can tell by reading this, I’m really in love with the cultures in Japan and South Korea.
My goal is to bring K-Pop to smaller areas in the United States, and I plan to start in South Texas. Even though K-Pop is already popular, I want it to be better known to people who can’t make it to this particular area. (Example: ENHYPEN’s concert is in Houston, while I’m in Kingsville, about 3 hours away)
I hope this course will help me reach what I have been wanting to have, a career.
